Re-reading notes feels productive but doesn’t create lasting memory. Passive review is almost useless without retrieval practice.
Without a schedule, you add cards faster than you review them. Box 1 overflows, the habit breaks, and the whole system collapses.
Flashcard apps gamify your reviews but obscure how your memory actually works. The algorithm decides; you just click. There’s no understanding of the system.
Four steps. Works with index cards, sticky notes, or any paper. No app needed.
Front: the question. Back: a short answer (1–5 words). One concept only — no lists, no paragraphs.
Every new card starts in Box 1, regardless of how well you think you know it. Box 1 is reviewed every single day.
Correct answer: move the card to the next box (longer interval). Wrong answer: back to Box 1. Even a card from Box 5 goes back if you miss it.
Once a card survives to Box 5 (or whichever is your last box), you’ve reviewed it enough times at spaced intervals to consider it learned. Retire it or move it to an archive box.
